The 2017 January Adventure Speakers

John Dominic Crossan   ...Buzzy Pickren, the founder of JA has said of Dom Crossan, "I was looking for a new religious paradigm when I stumbled upon John Dominic Crossan, Marcus Borg and others at Ring Lake Ranch, WY. I felt like the tent meeting preacher who would say 'God has put it on my heart.' I wanted to bring some of that Emerging Christianity back to the Bible belt." And Buzzy did just that! Dom Crossan appeared in 2010. We are delighted he is back by popular request in 2017.

John Dominic CrossanJohn Dominic Crossan was born in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, in 1934. He was educated in Ireland and the United States, receiving a Doctorate of Divinity from Maynooth College, Ireland (1959). Dr. Crossan joined the Roman Catholic Servites Order in 1950, and was an ordained priest from 1957 to 1969.

After leaving the priesthood, he joined DePaul University, Chicago, and remained there until 1995. It was during this time he was co-chair of the Jesus Seminar (1985-1996). He is currently Professor Emeritus in DePaul’s Department of Religious Studies.

Dr. Crossan has lectured to thousands all over the world and has written 27 books, many of which have been translated into numerous languages. His most recent book is How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian: Struggling with Divine Violence from Genesis through Revelation (HarperOne, 2015). Needless to say, his influence in the Christian community will be felt for generations to come.

Rev Robin Meyers   ...People who attended JA2016 have said of Robin, "Robin's maturity and ease of presentation is appreciated. I like his messages" ... "Provocative, personable, erudite yet comprehesible" ... "Invigorationg, flame-fanning!" ... "We have read Robin's books and listened to his sermons online, and are delighted to hear him in person."

Rev Robin MeyersBorn in Oklahoma City and raised in Wichita, Kansas, Rev. Robin Meyers received a Master of Divinity from Phillips University Graduate Seminary, Enid, Oklahoma; a Doctor of Ministry from Drew University, Madison, New Jersey; and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma. He was the Earl Preacher for the Earl Lectures at Berkeley, California, and gave the 2013-2014 Lyman Beecher Lectures at Yale.

He is one of a growing number of ministers who have managed to blend Emerging Christianity into a traditionally fundamentalist congregation. He accomplished just this in Oklahoma City (for goodness sakes!) at the Mayflower Congregational Church, where he has been the senior minister for 30 years. He is the best-selling author of seven books, the latest of which is Spiritual Defiance: Building a Beloved Community of Resistance (Yale University Press, 2015).

The observer might notice that Reverend Meyers follows Dr. Crossan in being not only a respected religious leader and successful author, but is a professor as well. He is Distinguished Professor of Social Justice in the Philosophy Department at Oklahoma City University, where he has taught for 25 years.

Dr. Crossan and Rev. Meyers have worked together in the past, and look forward to joining efforts once again at January Adventure 2017. We are indeed honored and delighted to welcome them back, and hope you’ll be there, too!
